I am constantly taking my dog to get its anal glands expressed; can feeding help? There are two glands located on either side of the anus. They have a dual function, on urination or defaecation it marks a territory. It also acts as the body’s dustbin, collecting and discharging waste. Problems arise when the glands become full. This is exhibited by the dog ‘scooting’ along the ground. Expressing the glands by a vet will solve the problem in the short term. A long term solution is to reduce the amount of waste and firm up the stools. A high quality food such as Montanus will ensure a balanced diet with a minimum of waste matter thus minimising the problem.
